Spring 2009 Workshop

The Space Science for Teachers workshop is professional development program for teachers in grades 4-9 where teachers learn hands-on and inquiry based activities to address the astronomy, space science, and nature of science components of the Virginia Standards of Learning.

If you are a teacher in Virginia for grades 4-9, you will

  • Develop new knowledge and skills that will help you more effectively address the Virginia Standards of Learning related to astronomy, space science, and the nature of science
  • Receive $400 in materials to help you teach astronomy and space science
  • Receive 3 graduate credit hours (ASTR 574) in astronomy
  • Use innovative technologies to learn the night sky and strategies to help your students experience, firsthand, the beauty and wonder of the night sky
  • Learn how to use a small telescope and have the ability to borrow a telescope for use at your school

The Spring 2009 workshop will be a blend of face-to-face meetings and distance learning. In order to participate, teachers must be able to attend all three face-to-face meetings. The face-to-face meetings will be held

  • Saturday, January 31, 2009 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Abingdon, Virginia
  • Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, 2009 (8:00 a.m. on March 28 to 2:00 p.m. on March 29), Charlottesville, Virginia (hotel will be provided for those needing lodging)
  • Saturday, May 23, 2009, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Abingdon, Virginia
