ASTRONOMY 130
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jan 17 2008: Hi Astronomy 130 Class, Normally, our first class would be this monday. However, the University now observes Martin Luther King day, and so this first class is cancelled. Since it's difficult to run the class prior to our first meeting (where I need to go over quite a bit of class logistics), we'll begin our class the following week. So: our first class is Monday Jan 28 in Clark 107. At that time, I'll explain in more detail about the evening lab sessions. Some of you have been emailing about your specific night. Don't worry -- there are no "specific nights" to which you are assigned. When class gets going, you will be free to attend our evening observational labs on whatever evenings suit your schedule (Mon-Thurs, 8-11pm), though of course you will need to take advantage of clear weather when it occurs. The first week of labs (week of 28th) I WILL ask you to commit to one evening so we can give you a brief orientation session, to help both with your knowledge of the night sky and our lab/telescope area. About texts for our class: you will need to purchase three separate items for this class (the UVa produced 130 Lab Manual; the Edmund Mag-5 Star Atlas; and the plastic "Star Wheel"), all available at the UVa Hall Bookstore. I suggest you get these sometime after the middle of next week -- the Lab Manual will probably arrive this weekend, but the Star Atlas was back-ordered and has a delivery date of early next week. OK, I think that covers things. We have a nice semester coming up -- Mars and Saturn are visible in the evening at the beginning of the semester, and on Feb 20 we have a total eclipse of the moon! I look forward to seeing you all in class on Monday the 28th. regards Prof Whittle. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
