Fan Mountain Observatory 10-inch
Cooke Astrograph Refractor
The University of Virginia operates a 10-inch (0.25 meter) f/4.5 astrograph at Fan Mountain Observatory, about 15
miles south of Charlottesville. The telescope is a wide field instrument with a 10° field of view using photographic plates. A
gift of the
Carnegie Observatories, it was originally used at McCormick
Observatory by
Alexander Vyssotsky with an objective prism to obtain spectra of stars over the entire 10° field. With this
he produced one of the first
catalogues
of nearby M dwarfs.
